Juxtaposing elegant silhouettes with luxe fabrics and exaggerated accents, Badgley Mischka’s Fall 2022 collection dares to splash Old Hollywood glamor with the extravagance of the 80s. Fabric draped into voluminous bows and flowery arrangements adorn the busts of many of the gowns – these large details, in colors ranging from shocking scarlet to rich espresso, infuse drama into the collection as a whole. Each piece is classic, yet far from demure. Wide, floppy bows reminiscent of doll-like dresses accentuate the empire waist of many of the gowns, and paired with the soft pinks and jewel tones, come across as an embodiment of traditional femininity.
However, many of the looks play with menswear, particularly outerwear and suits. The first look of the collection screams 1920s Wall Street with its tobacco colored double-breasted sport coat, paired with a cloche hat, leather gloves and trousers. The coat’s many buttons, straps and belt feel straight out of a 20s fashion ad, but the velvety pants paired with it add fluidity to an otherwise structured outfit.
Movement is central to this collection, and it is through the combination of floaty and heavy fabrics that Badgley Mischka creates visual contrast and intrigue in each piece. Chiffon and silk reflect the light beautifully as the models stride through what appears to be a vast, grandiose ballroom, but it is the artfully flashy use of sequins that makes these gowns and suits worthy of a Gatsby-esque gala. The arrangement of contrasting fabrics mirrors the era in history that the collection is meant to evoke– structured and practical during the day, and brazenly extravagant when the sun goes down. Perhaps by illustrating the journey of a 1920s socialite from day to night, Badgley Mischka seeks to reinvent that balance of “work hard play hard” in contemporary society.
