Performative activism has long been a widespread issue across various industries. This past year, the fashion industry’s exploitation of minorities has been amplified by voices of the Black Lives Matter movement, which has led to a bandwagon of worldwide companies, like H&M and Gucci, who were quick to release solidarity statements in support of BLM. With the resurfacing of past scandals, these solidarity statements are seen as empty promises from large corporations who do more harm than good. With the surge of political unrest, the fashion industry continues to selfishly exploit movements such as Black Lives Matter to shallowly elevate its public image.
